This September has been Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. At Mexa Solutions, we’ve gone GOLD in supporting this cause, and raising money for one of the childhood cancer charities, Alice’s Arc.

Every day in the UK, 12 children and young people will receive the devastating news that they have cancer. Out of those 12, two will not survive.

These statistics are heartbreaking, and we stand with those trying to make a change.

We were inspired to raise awareness and money this month by a local Stubbington 10-year-old girl, Sophie. She spent the last year battling a rare form of cancer, Rhabdomyosarcoma and tragically passed away at the start of this month. Sophie was an incredible character, with such bravery; always campaigning for more research and money into cancer treatments. Her amazing family continue her legacy, and you can read more about their journey on their Facebook page (Sophie’s Journey).

At Mexa, we decided to do a desk walking challenge. Our aim, between us, was to walk 25 miles on our office treadmill. The treadmill was stationed under each of our desks throughout the day; all whilst undertaking our day jobs.

Even one of our team, Lou (the mastermind behind the fundraising idea), undertook her 5.4 mile walk in a Pikachu onesie! This was the closest to gold she had, and she was determined to “go gold” for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

After a day of sweat, raised heartbeats and aching muscles, we were able to not only reach our target of 25 miles but exceed it, totalling 33 miles in the end.

The office was certainly buzzing – a brilliant opportunity to come together for a great cause, challenging ourselves but also having fun in the process.

We’ve all learnt a lot more about Childhood Cancers this month, and how we can support those charities making a difference in both the research into new treatments and in caring for the families.

In doing our challenge, we’ve been able to raise an incredible £224 for Alice’s Arc. This charity funds research into finding more targeted and less harsh treatments for rhabdomyosarcoma, working alongside centres of excellence for cancer research and treatment. They help fund the salaries of Scientists, Research Assistants and Research Nurses involved in ground-breaking clinical trials from the laboratory to the hospital (as well as the necessary equipment/materials). They also support the children and families affected by this disease, providing both medicines and support to ease the treatment process.
