Resigning can be a tough process. For many of us, it’s not something we look forward to, but nonetheless is part of finding a new job. However, there are some things to take into account as you take the plunge.

Here are 5 things to think about when you decide to resign:

  1. Make sure it’s the right decision – have you had those tough conversations with your current boss to see if there’s anything that can be improved at your current workplace? If you’ve exhausted your options, then you know it’s the right time to move on.
  2. Leave on good terms – you never know when you might work alongside them again. Remain polite, and professional, and thank them for the opportunity they’ve given you.
  3. Put it in writing – for most companies, a formal letter of resignation is a requirement for handing in your notice. Remember to keep it concise but professional too.
  4. Explain your reasons – make sure you know why you want to leave, and you’ve clearly thought these through. Your company may do an exit interview with you where they wish to go through these reasons, and it will help you have clarity over your decisions.
  5. Stand your ground – if you’ve already made the informed decision you want to leave, then don’t get swayed at the last moment to stay. Often companies may counteroffer, or make you feel ‘the fear’ of going into the unknown, but you’ve come to this decision for a reason, so stick to it.
